Your Jacket Saved My Life!

Apr 23, 2012 by Marcus Lewis

Hey if you can add this to your reviews I'd be very thankful. I was riding my bike this morning and had a freak accident bottom line your gear saved me from a lot of pain. Look at the jacket if I hadn't had it on my medical bill could have been pretty expensive. Thanks I will be doing more business with you guys. My next question is do you still carry this color jacket.

Pro Racer Gloves

Feb 04, 2012 by Steve Gould

Hey Guys,
I just came home to find my new gloves had arrived and I wanted to share how pleased I am with them. I ordered the pro racer gloves because I am familiar with the fit and quality from my last set of gloves, but my new
pair of Pro Racer gloves are beyond my expectations! The fit, quality and robust feel of the glove are truly great! Thanks again for
delivering a great product.

Apr 14, 2012 by Motorcycle Vintage Leather Jacket Review

Do you long for the days when men were men, motorcycles were fire-breathing (sometimes literally) and unpredictable , and MotoGP bikes had less electronic whizz-bangs than the Space Shuttle?......Then this might be the jacket for you!

Komodo is a small company that has little interest in being the biggest name in motorcycle gear. That's right they are just fine being a smaller company. Their goal is to build some of the best, highest quality motorcycle gear and sell it at a price point that their bigger competition can't match.

The Komodo Vintage Leather Jacket was one of their first designs and it came from feedback that they were getting from riders that wanted an old school type of motorcycle jacket but with modern protection. No funky designs, no 50 gazillion pockets and zippers everywhere; just a good old fashioned motorcycle jacket. Komodo, being a smaller company, listened to what riders were asking for and made a jacket just for them; try getting a big gear company to do that!

The Vintage Leather Jacket is made with 1.2-1.4mm premium drum dyed cowhide so you know it is going to give good protection when and if needed. Better quality leather isn't all that's needed to make a jacket give good protection though, you also need CE approved armor which the Vintage has in both the shoulders and forearms. Double stitching in critical impact areas also helps the Vintage's crash-worthiness. As you can see the jacket may have a Vintage style but it is fully modern when it comes to safety.

Of course all those safety items won't mean smack if the jacket isn't good looking or doesn't fit correctly, right?

As you can see from the pictures the jacket is designed with what they call an "athletic reflex cut" which simply means that when you are in the riding position (OK stop with the "assume the position" jokes) the jacket doesn't feel like it is cutting off circulation to your arms. The torso of the Vintage is kind of square cut and in keeping with the "simple is better" mission of the jacket there is no waist adjustment.

The sleeves have a panel of Schoelller Keprotec on them for breathability and anti-abrasion. At the bottom of the sleeve is a zipper and an old fashioned snap to help seal the cuff. This is a jacket that the longer you wear it the more comfortable it is going to get; much like leather jackets of old. One of the areas that will get more comfortable as it breaks in is the cuffs. Right out of the box they are a little stiff which is due in part to their design; a piece of leather is "rolled" around the edge of the sleeve to make the cuff. While this looks completely old-school it does leave them feeling stiff. My suggestion would be to sit and work the cuffs as you watch TV for a few nights and they should be soft and supple from then on.

The front panel of the jacket is ventilated and there are 2 vents at the shoulder and two vents on the lower back. The vents on the lower back are so well designed that I didn't see them until a few minutes ago! One quirk of this jacket is the liner vest for colder weather riding; it doesn't zip in. It also doesn't snap in, velcro in, superglue in, or attach in any other way. The nice thing is that you have an accessory quilted vest that zips together and can be used even off the bike under or over any other clothes. There really is no drawback to not having the liner attach to the jacket, it is more of an oddity than an issue.

CE rated armor is located in both the elbows and shoulders and Komodo also puts a back pad in as well. Now this is not a back "protector" but it is better than nothing, which is what other manufacturers give you.

As far as sizing goes the Vintage is an aberration. I have always had to buy jackets in size large because mediums never fit me in the sleeves. I apparently have the torso that fits a medium jacket but my arms are too long for size medium sleeves. I don't think I have monkey arms so I've never been able to figure out why this is. Komodo originally sent me the Vintage jacket in a large and when I put it on the sleeves were down past my knuckles and I looked like I was swimming in it. OK then, medium it is. The sleeves on the medium are still a little long by about a half-inch but this only bothers me when I'm off the bike and wearing the jacket.

Two parts of the jacket that may get overlooked by some are the leather flap that sits behind the main zipper and the welting that sits on either side of the zipper. On any leather jacket the zipper is really the weakest part; not only in the event of it pulling apart but in the just as likely event of wearing through from sliding along the ground. Komodo has done what most manufacturers do to help avoid the zipper pulling apart by using quality YKK Nickel zippers but it is their method of avoiding the wearing through that really sets this jacket apart. As you can see in the photo, the welts to either side of the zipper are large enough to completely cover the zipper with two layers of leather. To supplement that and in case there is a wear through incident, Komodo left a panel of leather behind the zipper that is wide enough to go from one side of the front panel to the other. Basically if you are sliding on your stomach long enough to wear through the welting AND the zipper itself, you still will have one more layer of leather to wear through. If you wear through that layer as well then you are on your own; heck you wanted to lose that beer gut anyway right?

The Vintage Leather Jacket from Komodo isn't for everyone and Komodo knows it. This is why, I'm sad to say, the jacket is going to be discontinued once all current stock is sold out. Apparently sales have been slowing down on this model once the initial flurry of people wanting one was over so the decision was made to drop the Vintage.

So if you are looking for a high quality jacket that offers great protection without all the bells and whistles you should head over to Komodogear.com and order yours. The Vintage Leather Jacket is available (quantities are limited) in Yellow, White/Red/Black, White/Blue/Black, Blue, Orange, Red, and Silver for $249.95.

Apr 14, 2012 by Motorcycle Ceno Mesh Jacket Review

I’m not one who enjoys riding in extreme temperatures like when the local bank sign reads 110 degrees outside or conversely when it’s 5 below. So when the leaves change into a full spectrum of color and start falling to the ground like a lead balloon or when the air is filled with grass clippings and the sound of birds chirping is when I take pleasure in riding the most.

Obviously I’m painting a picture of fall and spring but not everyone has a "change of seasons" so riding in hazy, hot and humid weather might be a daily occurrence. Even during those times every rider should be protected and wear quality gear (e.g. jacket, boots, gloves, helmet, etc.). There’s no denying the fact that I’m a big advocate for wearing proper gear and I always wear all of my gear when I go riding (as you should also). That being said wearing full leathers even when the temperature isn’t hitting triple digits but none the less still hot out does make riding less enjoyable.

Komodo has a cure for such a dilemma of "should I ride in a t-shirt or sweat in a leather jacket." Their Ceno Mesh Jacket gives you the best of both worlds: protection and air flow. The former is accomplished by the Ceno’s CE rated armor and polymesh shell.

Apr 14, 2012 by Motorcycle Meso Race Glove Review

These high performance race gloves come in standard sizes: S, M, L, XL, XXL (US) and are true to form. This means if you’re a medium then order a medium. If you’re a large then a large it is then. No guessing if the glove is going to be too big or too small and waiting weeks for the correct size to be shipped. These sizes should accommodate almost every rider, which is a good thing since we all don’t have the same anatomy. I’ll let you create your own punch line here.

Apr 14, 2012 by Motorcycle Pro Boot Review Two Wheel Freaks

To address the needs of my feet, over the past few months I have been wearing Komodo Pro Boots for street and track duty. The Komodo Pro Boots are a value-priced pair of motorcycle specific footwear that are, hands down, better to ride in than a pair of hiking boots or steel-toes you picked up at the local Wal-Mart store.

Like most riding boots, the Pro Boots are designed to work with you while on your bike. The top of the toe box is reinforced with plastic for durability against the shifter and is narrow enough to allow easy use of foot controls. The soles, which are constructed of oil resistant non-slip material, are thin and narrow, but firm enough to give good feel. The boots do not get in the way while you move around on the pegs, and the soles offer good support to your feet and arches while doing so.
To beef up the boot, they are constructed of non-perforated 1.8 to 2.0 mm of cowhide, and reinforced with TPU on the shins, outer ankle, and around the entire heel. Reinforced heels and outer ankles is not a feature seen in many comparably priced street boots. Additionally, the heel is also accented with a “shock absorbing system,” which equates to a piece of rubber type material around the heel to assist with impact absorption

Great boots! Ordering a new pair to replace the pair that wore out after two years of daily use. Wear to the office then swap to dress shoes. Have worn them all day on several occasions when I went somewhere but didn't want to take an extra pair of shoes.

Motorcycle Mishap Wearing Komodo Gear K-FX Leathers

Nov 30, 2011 by Joel Kouski

September 21st 2008 is a day I'll remember for the rest of my life. A lot of people tell me I should have died that day.

I've been riding for about five years, have considerable track time, and about 30k miles of riding under my belt. I've completed two MSF safety courses and have experienced US Route 129 and lived to tell about it.

At about 2:30pm September 21st, 88 Degrees outside and clear skies, I was riding home from a friend's house. I've taken that same route multiple times before, but on this particular day my trip would stop at an on ramp and be redirected to a hospital bed. I had on full racing attire (Komodo K-XP full racing suit, Sidi racing boots, icon gauntlet gloves, and a Shoei X-11 helmet). As I entered the on ramp, going about 45 mph, I shifted my weight over and got settled in for the corner. When the time came to initiate the turn, I pushed right and started to lean. Immediately the front tire washed out and I found myself airborne with the motorcycle completely out from under me. I had enough sense to make it to my backside, landing on my right hip. I slid about thirty feet and impacted the guardrail feet first, about 20 degrees from perpendicular to the guardrail. The last thing I remember was the loudest sound I've ever heard.

Both of my legs were wrapped underneath my upper body, and my upper body was wrapped around one of the vertical supports for the guardrail, says one of the witnesses. I was knocked unconscious immediately and didn't wake up until the ambulance arrived several minutes later. I woke up to a witness slowly opening my tinted visor, probably afraid of what she might see. She told me to be still, but since I couldn't feel anything from the middle of my back down, I thought I might be okay. I took a quick inventory of my ability to blink and look side to side, and removed my helmet. I didn't have the strength in my neck to hold my head up. That's about the time the EMT yelled at me not to move. He asked me if I could move my legs. I said "Yep" and thought I was moving them. With a disgusted look on his face he told me he had to cut my suit off of me and take me to the hospital. I told him he was crazy. He immediately pulled out his scissors and slid them down my collar. I jerked away quickly and he urgently said, "Does that hurt?" I said, "No, it cost me a thousand dollars!" He didn't see that humor and continued cutting off the suit. At that point they started putting drugs into me and I don't remember much until the ambulance ride, hitting every speed bump and pothole on the way to the hospital.

I broke my left femur in eight places, my right femur in three places, broke my left kneecap in half, compound fractured my right tibia and fibula, broke two vertebrae in several places, and cracked several ribs. My left knee suffered the worst of the damage. I tore everything in my left knee except the main nerve running through the center of my knee and two hamstring tendons.

Thanks to the Komodo Gear K-XP racing suit I was wearing, all skin was intact around my left knee. I had zero road rash. The doctors later told me that had my left knee been exposed to the road, they would not have been able to operate on it due to the severe risk for infection, and it would have had to be amputated from the knee down. Further, the doctors told me that had the suit not been there to hold everything together, the bottom half of my left leg would have been ripped off upon impact, and I would have bled out and died in a matter of minutes on scene. A price tag could never be put on my leg, or my life. Therefore, the product that saved them is eternally priceless. God let me live, and his medium by which my life was saved was my Komodo K-XP racing suit.

Thank you Komodo Gear!.

Very Respectfully,
Joel Kouski

Thanks For All Your Help!

Nov 30, 2011 by Stephen

Thanks for all your help.

The Meso suit is AWESOME. Way more than I would have ever expected to own. What a deal is all I have to say! Thank you!!!!!! Since VIR is local I hope to start spending some time there. So all this is just getting some stuff lined up for doing track stuff next spring / summer so the budget doesn't take such a big hit on the class stuff and the bike needs and gear needs at that time.

I had to do courier stuff the other day for work. Not a really long ride day but I needed to make a laptop deliver 200 miles away. As usual it was a reason to be on the bike. I wore the suit just to begin the process of getting acclimated to it and it to me. Like I said it is fantastic!

The day started in the upper 60s and I was actually a bit chilly in it until the temps got to 80. From 80 to the upper 80s (89 the high for the day) it was great. (I have a solid older 2 piece for those less warm days if needed) The presence of the hump is an awareness to get used to but nothing intrusive at all. By the end of the trip I was pretty much comfortable with it. It does make a slight sweaty spot when in a certain position for a while with the sun behind you. That goes away when you have reason to move around. The rest of the suit was pretty transparent. Yeah you are aware you are in more than some light wt gear but it isn't intrusive at all. Rather, it feels almost a comfort when on the bike. Thank you .. for your help and to your team for developing such a great gear item!

Great Product - Saved my Life!

Nov 30, 2011 by Michael Capps

I would like to thank you for making a quality product. I have a pair of Komodo K-FX Gloves that have been crash tested twice w/ absolutely no damage to my hands. I had a 50 mph lowside on the street a few months ago & all I received was a slight grinding down of the palm sliders. This past Saturday at Texas World I had a 110 mph highside. I slid over 50 feet. The gloves have a slight rub mark on one palm & the sliders are all ground down pretty good. I had a pair of Komodo Ceno's that I sold to get the K-FX because of the additional armor in the wrist & the palm sliders.

Sincerely,
Michael Capps

Motorcycle Crash Course 101 - Ceno Mesh Jacket jacket and Ceno Street Gloves

Nov 30, 2011 by Joel Sadau

I am an avid street rider with numerous track days under my belt.
This is a testimony for other motorcycle riders to learn from - wear your gear!

...Not long ago I was riding my Honda RC51 on the street that day.
Conditions were good.

I accelerated through 3rd gear and was somewhere close to 90 mph and the throttle stuck!
Trying to slow the bike, I had applied the front brake and the front end tucked and I
went down on the left side.

I slid on the asphalt for approximately 300 feet and as the bike passed me sliding, I thought this cant be good for me or the bike. The bike bounced off the post of the guard rail and broke the front rim.

I jumped up and went to get the bike out of the road.

I got to the bike and picked it up and moved it to the side of the road and rested it there.
A nice couple sat with me until Terry (my wife) that was riding in the group could retrieve the tow vehicle.

The quote of the day, " Dude! You're alive."

Thanks to Komodo Gear, the Ceno Mesh Jacket jacket and Ceno Street Gloves I was wearing saved my life. I walked away - can't say that about my bike .

About the gear, the mesh jacket took a real beating on the forearms - they slid on the asphalt the whole time and the mesh gave way due to heat and abrasion (as expected), but the jacket held together and the CE armor stayed where it was supposed to; I didn't suffer any injury besides a strawberry on my forearm from the pounding. The gloves absorbed a lot of abrasion - everywhere - including the knuckles. The hard plastic on the knuckles and fingers did grind down (not all the way) and my hands are injury free as well. The jacket and gloves are toast, but I have no road rash and will always were quality gear.
